Amazon has introduced the 3rd generation of its Kindle Oasis book reader, improved page turning speed as well as added color temperature adjustment.

The Kindle Oasis 3 is equipped with a 7-inch Carta E-Ink HD touch screen, a resolution of 1680 × 1264 and a pixel density of 300ppi. The screen is made of glass and the body is made of high quality aluminum. It has a backlight and is the first Kindle to adjust the color temperature of the lights. So how does this feature work? Typical backlighting on reading machines is white LEDs placed on the top or bottom of the screen, from which the light is distributed evenly across the screen.

The color temperature system is adding orange LEDs next to the white. You can use both lamps at the same time and mix white light with different orange tones. The lighting system and the color of the lights can both be adjusted by the slider in the quick menu, or automatically change based on the light sensor of the device. The new Oasis has 25 LEDs, 12 white and 13 oranges.

Kindle Oasis 3 has many ways to adjust the temperature of the backlight. You can drag the WARMTH bar on the quick menu bar, the same way you adjust the backlight brightness. In addition, the machine can also automatically adjust the brightness with two sensors placed above the page switch key. Finally, the color of the device may also change based on the current time of day.

Inside the device is a 1GHZ dual-core Freescale / NXP IMX7 processor, 512 MB RAM. It still holds 2 page switches as previous generations and has the option to reverse the page switch function of these 2 buttons.

The weight of Oasis 3 is 188g, lighter than that of Kobo Forma. It has a battery capacity of 1130 mAh, which is larger than the previous generation Oasis’s battery capacity of only 1,000 mAh. The device is still equipped with waterproof features and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Kindle Oasis 3 is water resistant, so you can read books in the bath or in the ocean. The device is IPX8 certified, allowing it to be submerged under 2m of clean water for 60 minutes.

Kindle Oasis 3 runs on Linux and in the main menu you can keep track of recently added books or current books. At the bottom of the menu are book suggestions from Amazon, based on books you’ve bought or viewed but haven’t bought yet. The ad version has an additional bar at the bottom of the screen that changes with the day. You can also set it in Settings so that it displays Your Library instead of the main screen.

Reading experience

Kindle Oasis 3 supports Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, MOBI, PRC formats; HTML DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, PMP; Audible audio (AAX).

Amazon has developed Ember and Ember Bold fonts that are thick fonts to help people with eye problems read more easily. In addition, you can adjust the thickness of all the default fonts in the machine.

When you are reading a book, you can change the display to suit your preferences such as font, font size, alignment, line spacing, etc. You can also save this information as a Profile to apply with other books.

Another interesting feature when reading books on the Kindle is that the device can optionally display information such as the time of the book, the percentage read…

The price of the 3rd generation Kindle Oasis has not changed compared to the previous version, US$250 for the 8 GB model and US$270 for the 32 GB model. Amazon officially launched the third-generation Kindle on July 24.
